Barford Tigers Boys Under-12s marked a significant milestone this season by qualifying for the Midland In2 Regional Hockey Finals at the Nottingham Hockey Centre for the first time in the club’s history. Their place in the competition was secured following a well-deserved second-place finish in the Worcestershire County round.
Entering the regional tournament, Tigers faced a notable challenge in terms of squad composition. The team featured players ranging in age from 9 to 12, competing against opposition sides largely made up of 11- and 12-year-olds. Despite this age disparity, the team demonstrated resilience, skill, and maturity throughout the competition.
On the pitch, after a difficult start against strong opposition the performances and understanding amongst the team improved with each match. Tigers delivered a commendable performance, ultimately finishing joint 9th overall. Several of their matches were closely contested, with the team showing composure under pressure—most notably in a play-off match where they secured victory through penalty shuffles. These results highlighted both their technical ability and mental strength in high-pressure situations.
A standout moment of the tournament was Tigers victory over Stourport Hockey Club, the reigning Worcestershire County Champions. This result underlined the team’s capability to compete against and overcome top-level opposition.
Leadership played a key role in the team’s success. Captain and top scorer Hansveer Matharu led by example throughout the tournament, contributing both in attack and in guiding the team on the field. The wider squad also made valuable contributions, with each player playing their part in what was a genuine team effort.
Overall, this achievement represents a major step forward for the Barford Tigers youth section. Competing—and performing strongly—at regional level provides a solid foundation to build upon in the coming years. The experience gained will be invaluable in the development of the players and sets a positive benchmark for future squads.
